Bill Hazelett, 91 Pioneer at Stowe, ski and binding innovator, early heliskier Longtime Stowe, Vt. skier Bill Hazelett died June 27,
at 91, after a day of sailing on Lake Champlain. Born in Cleveland, Hazelett overcame a bout of polio to become a lifelong sailor, skier and pilot. xHe settled in Stowe in 1945 and put his engineering skills to work by devising the first electric-eye race timing system. He was an influential friend and advisor to Stowe owner C.V. Starr, Mad River founder Roland Palmedo, IBM chairman Tom Watson, skimaker Hower Head and heliski pioneer Hans Gmoser. In 1956 Hazelett launched his own machine tool factory near Burlington. He invented one of the first efficient high-elasticity ski bindings, and may have been the first ski designer to figure out that the key to floating the ski tip was to soften the tail. Beginning in 1968 he anchored a group skiing from the Bugaboo Lodge for 21 winters.
