Preserving Skiing's Heritage:
the World's Ski Museums
By E. John B. Allen
In nearly all the skiing countries of the world-China, Slovenia, Spain
and the United Kingdom are the latest to make the attempt-there are museums
or parts of museums and libraries devoted to skiing's history. The Olympic
Museum in Lausanne, of course, has a deep interest in the history of the
Winter Games, and the FIS has sponsored three history of skiing conferences.
A ski history conference was held in the United States for the first time
just before the 2004 Winter Olympics. This is all very encouraging and
of comparatively recent origin. Only the Norwegian Ski Museum has existed
for eighty years, and even before its opening in 1923 there had been ski
artifacts on exhibit as far back as 1655. The majority of museums, though,
are post-World War II creations, many initiated by individuals like Theodor
Hüttenegger in Mürzzuschlag, Austria and Gilbert Merlin in Grenoble, France.
The museums are not all of a kind. Some are devoted solely to the preservation
of skiing material, others are part of a small, local museum, yet others
form a section of a vast collection of folk history. In the United States,
with one exception, ski museums are combined with a Hall of Fame, a bow
to financial supporters. Purists may shudder, but ski museums in the United
States are all private, so owe nothing to governments national, regional
or town for their existence although they may receive help from those
bodies.
Ski heritage and its preservation relies heavily on specialized libraries,
many of them an integral part museums. Others are entirely beholden to
an institution of learning, such as the library of the German Sports University
(Deutsche Sporthochschule) in Cologne.
I have spent many hours, in some cases days in a number of the museums
over the past fifteen years and it is exciting to see the changes that
are happening. From amassing "a bunch of the old stuff," the museums are
moving increasingly towards professionalization: computerized accessioning,
archival treatments of wood and cloth, film and photograph, documents
and art. This growing sophistication requires major financial support.
Europeans have to persuade their sponsoring municipalities, counties and
national governments to send Euros in their direction, while Americans
spend their time trying to increase their memberships to finance the operation
of their museums.
